I remember reading that when it came out on the internet in my hotel in El Dorado Arkansas and I began weeping. I still shudder when I read it.

That was issued by a met in Slidell who was so exhausted with people like Nagin as they continued to delay and pussiefoot around that he felt desperate.I read about that last night. It was a statement like no other that has ever been put out.

my suggestion to anyone who is interested in finding out what happened is to read the transcripts from the congressional hearing and the reports from the people who know what should have happened and not just what happened. It is easy to get caught up in blaming someone for something that are out of their control and power.

Many people have no idea who is responsible for what in a situation such as Katrina. For instance, the average person from New Orleans thinks Bush could have sent help quicker and has no idea there are procedures in place for a state to receive federal aide. The procedures are in place to stop the state from being taken over by the feds unnecessarily. One of the main reason the National Guard was not sent in sooner was because Blanco insisted she remain in control of the guard and not the feds.
As far as the mandatory evacuation that is just a joke, as we see people still would not leave and was not forced to leave. I don't think a lot of people even know what the word mandatory means so calling it earlier would not have helped them! What would have helped them is PERSONAL RESPONSIBLITY and quit laying on the governments legs because as Katrina showed the government cannot always move as quickly as you want it to when you are laying on its leg.

A lot of the information this "historian" got was from Nagin's enemies....and there is no way to prove things i.e. he was holed up in the bathroom and wouldn't get out!

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

I generally agree with you on all that.Common sense dictates that lives would have been saved had he issued a mandatory evacuation earlier and, like that hero met that issued that statement, did everything he could to save whomever wanted to be saved...of course some wouldn't still and no one can blame anyone for that.I don't know why you put historian in quotes like he's not legit though.Check him out for yourself if you have doubts.

Right Bug. Mandetory evacuation doesn't mean they're gonna come in and remove you from the city. It simply means, if you chose to stay...no one will go in and rescue you or answer 911 calls. "You're on your own" I believe were the exact words from officials. Course, they did go in after them but that was after the storm was over. But, that warning was clear throughout.

He is a legit historian, but his book is not the place I would look to to find out what happened with the response to Katrina. I would prefer to go straight to the people who have access to ALL the information and not just from interviewing people. Heck if he interview Kanyee West (sp) he would say it was because Bush hated black people.

According to Nagin, Bush said he is happier to work with him then Landrieu and last I checked Nagin is still black. Of course it could be that Bush knows Nagin is so inapt at the job that he may not need to do as much as he would have had to do if Landrieu had won.

Reading this fellows book to find out what happened is like reading a biography of someone when you can read the autobiography.

I don't get that, since it's been almost 9 months since the time frame in the book has past, and he used hundreds or thousands of listed references to support it.

Have you read the book? If you read the book, then come to those conclusions, then ok.

There were some people who wouldn't leave, and will always be. There are those who wont believe it is trouble, and you can't do anything about them, true. However, the people who went to the superdome were willing to get away from there house but where given no way out of the city and no planning for what was going to take place after the hurricane hit. That was the biggest mistake.... by ALLL levels of authority.

" There is only one duty, only one safe course, and that is to try to be right and not fear to do or say what you believe." - Winston Churchill

"In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society. The sponsors and supporters of this bill believe that abortion is wrong because unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society. I agree with them." - Mike Rounds, Governor of South Dakota

I just looked..the book has 40 pages of just references of where everything came from...you can't beat the documentation. And Nagin waited until 930 Sunday to call for the mandatory evacuation....15 hours before expected landfall.:nono:
