How do you suggest they communicated? Everything was wiped out! He was probably high up in the Hyatt so he wouldn't be caught in the cross fire from his knuckleheads that were shooting trying to protect thier looted stuff and drugs. There are film clips and picture showing Nagin out in the streets so don't act like he just ran up the stairs of the Hyatt and hid out.

Do you realize you cannot just put people on a bus/train out of the city without having places up and running ready to accept them, fed them, etc. We are not talking about a few hundred people.

These same people that couldn't find their way out of the city sure found it back when Mardi Gras came around. Statistic show many returned for Mardi Gras and stayed. Unless you live, work or have to deal with the people in New Orleans you cannot comprehend what they are like. The majority of them are low life scum of the earth people who don't care about their kids or elders. How in the world can mothers of little babies go to the dome without food, forumla or diapers for their babies? How could they stay in their homes with babies and have to end up on the roof. Can you imagine who traumatic that was for babies to have to be air lifted froma roof? These people need to lose custody of their children!

Have to go back to work...I will rant later more LOL

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

thanks storm. I think I will pick up the book.

P.S. I used the word white chocolate because of Nagin's quote. I am white chocolate. Actually, white chocolate isn't chocolate at all. It does not have a single ingredient derived from cocoa beans.

Unbelievable that you STILL don't say that the first response should have come from the city government that did basically nothing. And Nagin might have gotten a photo op several days into it,but you've been brainwashed if you think he was doing anything other than being holed and hid and got very scared for HIS welfare instead of doing what a real leader is supposed to do and lead...he did not lead.A whiner and a hider is not a leader.

For ya'll wanting this and other good book deals, you can go to Zooba.com and it only costs you $9.95 for this and any book, total, shipping included. The catch is that you get at least one per month, but you can stop it at any time after 3 months, and you can get more at any time. This book I think lists for $29.95 plus tax.

Thanx for the tip!!

You know, I'm not defending him at all. I'll state it again, in my view he was the better of two poisons in the run-off. He needs to be held accountable for any actions that were wrong. In bug's defense, I think she is coming from the point of individual personal accountability for NOLA citizens. I get her point and agree with it. I don't think she is excusing Nagin. I've lived with this filth my whole life. That's right, filth! Not honestly poor people. There are those but the majority aren't. Maybe the book you've read speaks differently on the subject of NOLA poor. But her points on that are pretty dead on.

I'm not arguing with you or her about their position in life to that point, and how they have themselves to blame mostly or whatever. But circumstances being what they are, this did call for drastic government intervention to get them out,in my opinion, and that needed to start with the local government and then work to the state next.I've been to New Orleans a number of times and I don't doubt what you say about large parts of it.

Nagin re-elected

11:28 PM CDT on Saturday, May 20, 2006
WWLTV.com

Mayor Ray Nagin, ridiculed nationally and derided some locally following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, has been re-elected to office with a solid victory against Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Nagin received 52 percent of the vote, finishing with 59,460 votes to Landrieu's 54,131 or 48 percent of the vote.

"I am so humbled today," said a spirited but admittedly exhausted Nagin. "This is a great night for the city of New Orleans. This great city is ready to move forward."

Associated Press

Mayor Nagin greets supporters on Election NIght.

Nagin thanked those who endorsed him, including former opponents Rob Couhig, Virginia Boulet and Rev. Tom Watson. He also praised President Bush for living up to his pledge to rebuild the city.

Nagin also said he thanked financial supporters who had initially supported him and then changed sides, saying he was glad to have their money.

"To those of you who went to the other side, you went to the red-light district, I forgive you," he said.

Landrieu congratulated Nagin on his victory. "Come hell or high water, and we've had both, we need to come together," said Landrieu. "There are very few second chances in life, and we in New Orleans have a chance to put away the twin cousins of race and poverty."

Nagin took over 80 percent of the African-American vote and just over 20 percent of the white vote in defeating Landrieu. The totals are in contrast to four years ago when Nagin got 84 percent of the white vote in his race against Richard Pennington.

He received national attention as the mayor of a devastated city, especially with calls for the federal government to "get off their ***" and help the city in the first few days after the storm.

He also was roundly criticized for his Martin Luther King Day speech in which he declared New Orleans would be a "chocolate city" again.

Landrieu and Nagin both readily admitted that there wasn't much difference in their ideas, but Landrieu empahsized a difference in leadership, while Nagin emphasized not changing leaders in midstream.

That really pisses me off - "I forgive you"

I didn't see the part in there where he made mention of the "whites, blacks and yellow asians coming together"

um...YELLOW??? He is such a racist.

Is it just me or does that statement alone sound utterly ridiculous??? Who in the Sam Hell needs a politician to tell them when they need to leave, to protect themselves and their family, from a Hurricane? It's just plain stupid!!! I'm still convinced had that 'mandatory evacuation' order went out earlier you woulda still had those people who stayed. Unless, of course, they woulda been hand carried out (for free) and delivered to a (paid) hotel with (paid) meals for the duration!

And as Proger said, I too am not defending Nagin. But, if you're gonna ***** about something, you should ***** about something he's actually responsible for. The number of peeps who choose to stay in the city in not Nagins fault IMO!!! In addition, I totally don't think people who are not from here understand that 'choosing between the lesser evils' is common practice in Louisiana elections.

He WAS responsible...he is THE person that under the written guidelines is THE ONE to order a mandatory evacuation. That keeps getting pushed aside. It wouldn't have been a motel, but evacuation shelters. The government, the Red Cross, Churches, etc. all put them up in emergencies.
Yes,there are alot of ignorant people in New Orleans depending on the welfare state and having little education or common sense.Well, they are everywhere, but NO had a much larger percentage than other cities of similar size.

I like this part of the story. Not much difference between the 2. Great, see what I mean...it doesn't matter who is elected. It will be the residents that decide the outcome of the city.
