soonermeteor Wrote:^ exactly stormlover.... this is like Little Red Riding Hood keeping the wolf as a pet. He ran like a chicken with his head cut off when the hurricane came... and left his citizens to walk to the superdome with absolutley NO preperation to keep them there. Can you believe people on another forum i go to are EXCUSING HIM? They say any mayor would have been drug through the mud..... no.... they are completely wrong. This is about the JOB he did when the hurricane hit, and it was ghastly. Never had we heard of such loss of life in any of the Florida hurricanes the year before... and what were these mayors? Supermen? And before anyone says its apples and oranges... it has to do with evacuation! The city of St. Petersburgh was evacuated more than 24 hours before Charley was due to hit. Nagin woke up Sunday morning and decided "evacuation" might be a good idea. If he had been planning from the beginning about getting everyone out, he could have put together a plan to bus people from the superdome if they couldn't get a ride. He was responsible for getting those people to a safe place and he didn't. He left them to rot in the city when the worst hurricane in American history hit, while he flew off in a fancy helicopter to go get all chumy with more of his "chocolate" friends.

Im sorry for the harsh words proger... but it just makes me want to throw up and never try to understand American politics again.

Sooner...you got to remember that the "people" needing evacuation didn't get out cause they didn't have time. They didn't get out cause they didn't have a way out. The poor, black and unworking (mostly by choice) peeps. We're talking about 100,000 getto folks that were waiting for the city and state to hand carry them out. Now, I'm not excusing Nagin but you do have to compare apples to apples in that case.

It's easy to sit in white chocolate colorado, high up on your mountain and look down at the low lands of the US. The only other serious candidate was a member of a family that has made Louisiana state politics their family dynasty. They are a family that has feasted off keeping welfare families in fear of other candidates and have done nothing but baited them along to keep supporting them. Oh, yeah, I forgot Nagin caused Katrina. I forgot that Nagin has been in office since Hurricane Betsy and has overseen all of the Army Corps of Engineers levee project and approved their major design flaws. It was Nagin's fault that the levees broke in multiple places. It was Nagin's fault that over 85% of people in a recent poll taken of residents that didn't evacuate stayed because they didn't want to leave, not because they didn't have transportation. I guess you were also there alongside Nagin going from house to house in a boat, hacking through rooftops with an ax, and saving people. Nagin has had some slip-ups in speeches over the past few months making race dividing comments. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't mean it the way it came out. But I'm sure you know, since you seem very informed of Louisiana and New Orleans politics, that months before the hurricane that dozens of local black ministers wanted Nagin out of there because he wasn't "paying enough attention to the black community" by awarding all of these huge contracts to local ministers and their congregations. Money that in past years was given to them to line their pockets. I guess you know about how when Nagin entered the office he uncovered so many scandals in the local government that the past offices had begun and began shutting all of that down. I guess you knew all of the many other things that Nagin has done to actually rid the local government of crime and corruption.

Oh, I was mad as well over some of the things he has done in handling the post-Katrina recovery and some of the comments he has made. But he is by far the most qualified candidate and the right man for the job compared to those that were running against him.

P.S. I am also sorry for the harsh words, sooner. I don't intend to sound like a prick. But you write about the situation in many of your posts as if you know all the answers and know exactly what happened. "ran like a chicken with its head cut-off when the hurricane came? " Where did you get that from?? He didn't run anywhere. He was right there with everyone helping. The national guard and other help didn't get to the city in a reasonable time because of the governer's inaction. Not Nagin's. He has no power to call in them for help. I'm not defending all of his actions. He made mistakes. But not to the degree of the way you make it sound. We've had the argument many times over the evacuation stuff. It is like beating my head against a wall talking about it with you so I won't get into it anymore. You have misconceptions there also.

P.S.S. Since you've posted your comments on both sites, I will also.

Very well said Proger!

Again, speakin' of the timing of the evacuation orders....NO one can convince me that any more people would've left, than did, had that order came out days earlier than it did. That point, Sooner, is not a valid point with me at all. Juz my opinion.

Now, I am in no way, shape, or form a part of New Orleans, but my family is, so I dont wish to post my own personal thoughts on here, but I will give you this to feed on. There are people in my area that have gone both ways. The ones that voted for Mitch say that they just wanted to see someone new in office. Most that voted for Nagin say that they thought he did a horrible time in the first term and thought that he could turn things around... I am sorry if some of you feel this way, but thats like telling a guy that shot you in the nose that he deserves a second chance because he ment to shoot you right between the eyes...

Well Nagin this time claims he can get people out. The plan they came up with is the one they should have come up with in the beginning. The Superdome should not have been used as a shelter. It should have been used as a bussing station to other shelters outside of danger. What if Katrina had hit as a cat 5? The superdome could have fallen apart!

"In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society. The sponsors and supporters of this bill believe that abortion is wrong because unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society. I agree with them." - Mike Rounds, Governor of South Dakota

I too, find it humorous that people that live nowhere near here, pass judgement on our officials/state without knowing much about it.

Sooner....mark my word, this State will pay to bus all those poor, unemployed people out of here once, maybe even twice, and it will be a false alarm, cost the city and State thousands, maybe millions and that plan will go to hell in a handbasket. I really can't wait to see that cluster-f***. Cause those people will be expecting room accomodations and food for where ever they're sent. If you think that's the cure-all, you're totally wrong mah friend. Just sit back and watch. It'll be interesting!

I remember seeing those people who evacuated to the Superdome, for a storm in the past, on TV screaming and cursing cause their free hot dogs didn't have condiments to go along with it. When, all along, the mayor told them to bring their own food and water. Bussing them out of town will be the same situation. They will be screaming that those busses dropped them off in the middle of no where with no money, no food and no place to stay. Mark my word! Ya'll just don't understand...nor have ya'll seen the things we have, in the past.

It seems people who live elsewhere seem to feel sorry for those folks that stayed and claimed to have no money to leave the city. Yet, us who live here have much less sympathy for them. When has it become the gov't problem to drive people out of the city when a hurricane is coming? It's totally ridiculous! Now, grant it, there are the few elderly and sick we ALL have sympathy for. But, the majority that stayed behind were the unemployed, poor (mainly black) folk that we see and deal with on a daily basis and have much less sympathy for than you peeps up North! I've said it before and I'll say it again....we've lived here our whole freggin' lives. Why in the HELL do ya'll think we really need a "mandatory evacuation" order to realize we have to get out? We don't and you're nuts to think that THAT'S the reason people did not leave. It's just totally not true!

Couldn't have said it better, Eye!! It doesn't matter who is mayor here anyway. It matters who lives here!

Sooner, he made huge mistakes. I don't cover those up. Nor am I letting him off the hook. You wanna see race bating? The Landrieau family has done that for decades. And that was the only other serious candidate. I wanted Peggy Wilson to win but she didn't make it into the run-off. She came right out and said some pretty shocking things in debates that I was all for. She blasted Nagin for all of his mistakes and further said she doesn't want the welfare queens, pimps, and drug dealers to move back. She was labelled a racist even though she didn't even hint at a skin color in her comments. It is just that everyone knows the majority of people that fall into those comments are black here. So out of Landrieau and Nagin, the lesser of 2 evils. I'll take Nagin again over anyone out of that family.

Apologies on the white chocolate thing. I shouldn't have said that, and no disrespect to you. I made the same hurtful comment, assumptions I was initially upset over you making.

Nagin did not make or let people walk to the superdome. There were busses provided at many locations in the city to pick up citzens and drop them off at the supderdome. BTW didn't you see the traffic jam of people driving to the superdome the minute it opened it. Many of these people could have driven out of town but choose to stay, either because they figured it was a false alarm, they did not want to spend their money on evacuating and they feel the government owes it to them.

Most of the people who stayed behind had the mentality that the government should take care of them because they are taken care of already with their welfare, food stamps, medical cards, WIC, etc. You could see the people standing in line waiting for the dome to open and rarely did you see them have any supplies with them. They expected to have everything handed to them on a silver platter. Most didn't seem to be carrying anything including extra clothes.

Nagin announced Saturday that he would be calling for a MANDATORY evaucation on Sunday morning, but had to get legal issues in places prior to making the official announcement. He had urged residents to leave prior to this. If you see a mack truck is headed straight to your house does someone have to force you to leave or tell you to leave. What did they think it would be like in the dome as party. A MAJOR hurricane was headed to New Orleans with predications to do just what it did.

As of Friday morning the storm was not predicted to hit New Orleans. Do you think he can just put people on a bus without having places setup ready to accept them. Even if there was plan as to where they wuold bring the people they need more then 24 hours to pull it all together. New Orleans is filled will uneducated criminals. I just wonder who in their right mind would want the job of driving these idiots out of town. Can you imagine guns being fired on the bus while you are driving?

Since when is it the Mayor's responsiblity to get people out of town. I believe Nagin screwed up on many levels as did the Governor who was responsible for some of the slow response from the feds. There are procedures that needed to be followed to receive help from the feds and she failed to impliment these in a timely manner. You cannot just say "give me everything you got" and expect the feds to give you what you need. The reason there are procedures is due to the democracy our country is ran under. A state is just not automatically taken over by the feds when there is a disaster.

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

I agree eye, people who don't see the majoirty of the resident of New Orleans have no idea what is happening. They have expensive cars, jewerly, nails and hair done all the while collecting welfare, food stamps, WIC and living in HUD housing.

These kind of people can not be pleased. I am sure after the first FREE bus trip to stay someone FREE they will once again scream they were taken away from their homes as SLAVES just like they complained after finally getting their butts out of New Orleans.

Not only did they curse because they didn't like the hot dogs they were served in the dome, they walked out in broad daylight in front of TV camera with the furniture from the dome!

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.
