Stormlover Wrote:Well, the DA can request the bond amount....and something is wrong in that system when a murder suspect gets $50,000 and these guys get $400,000....

Well Storm, I'm assuming that all depends on what kind of murder charge was brought against that individual. I'm sure it wasn't 1st degree..ya know. And, it's only one charge. These guys are being charged with more than one offense. Each offense is considered when setting bond. Sue...correct me if I'm wrong.
Not only are these guys being held on sexual assault, but kidnapping too. I'm telling ya...that kidnapping charge this is what's making this case worse for those boys.....With the bond AND the amount of time they'll spend in jail if conviced of that. Not the assualt..the kidnapping.

Oh...and with that said...didn't they say these guys were in trouble with the law before? I'm sure that has plenty to do with bail also.?. Sue?

Well I have several legal experts on different TV shows talking about what an injustice that is for the bail discrepency so I'm not just making up something that has a good reason.

My experience has been in civil law. But I think the judge does look at their past criminal history when considering bond and each charge is considered. Was this kid actually charged with murder? The article doesn't state a charge only the headline which we all know can be misleading. It does seem like a murder charge should warrant a higher bond.

Say his charge is 1st degree murder and he got a low bond, does that mean other criminals should too, it doesn't in my book.

Does anyone know if minimum and maximum bonds are set by law? Maybe each state has different standards.

Those legal "experts" on TV will say anything to get media attention to themselves. Come on they are lawyers. Anyone remember the BS that came out of the legal "experts" during the OJ trial. Injustice happens everyday to someone because the courts are ran by humans who are not perfect.

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

here we go again Ladybug...lol..this was also featured on the Drudge Report due to the ridiculous nature of the differing bonds...it is just wrong, something stinks in the Durham legal system. And yes,it was for murder
as the article DOES clearly say
A $50,000 bond was set Wednesday for one of two teens accused in Durham's first homicide of 2006, the March fatal shooting of 24-year-old Alvin Lee Jones

I agree the bond for the murderer sounds way too low. I have no idea what a murderers bond is normally. I would hope way higher. I am curious as to how a judge comes up with a bond. Guess I will have to google to get some answers. Did anyone say what an average bond for a murder charge is?

Interesting about the other woman that was with her...now changing her story, maybe to aid in her own troubles?

The attorneys claim Roberts at first told a member of the defense team that she did not believe the accuser's allegations. They say she has changed her story to gain favorable treatment in a criminal case against her. They note she also e-mailed a New York public relations firm, asking in her letter for advice on "how to spin this to my advantage."

"We believe ... her story has been motivated by her own self-interest," said attorney Bill Thomas, who represents one of the uncharged players. "I think that a jury will ultimately have to decide the question of her credibility."

Roberts, 31, was arrested on March 22 — eight days after the party — on a probation violation from a 2001 conviction for embezzling $25,000 from a photofinishing company in Durham where she was a payroll specialist, according to documents obtained by the AP.

Nope. The boys do have pasts. I'll have to research to give you specifics but I do remember reading that they've been in trouble before. Actually, I think they said most of the players have gotten in plenty trouble in the past.?. Threating to dissolve the team all together.?. I'll do some checking. /thumbup
