RE: Gulf Coast SnowGasm ? 1/28/14
No chains for me. I will be looking at more Ice than snow just like last week, except more this time. But just remember to slow the "F" down is you got to get on the road. I am a good winter driver, it is the other idiots I have to watch out for!!!!

And VDC/Traction Control will save our ass...

Starting tomorrow - however there is no timeline when this could happen:

• DOTD expects to start closing portions of I-10 from Lafayette to Slidell. This includes Horace Wilkinson Bridge and Twin Spans.
• The Louisiana National Guard is activating 450 personnel on state active duty to help DOTD with de-icing and road grading operations.

Mesoscale Discussion 37

< Previous MD

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0037
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0523 AM CST TUE JAN 28 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...SOUTHEAST TX...CENTRAL AND SRN LA...SRN MS...SRN
AL...AND PART OF WRN FL PANHANDLE

CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

VALID 281123Z - 281630Z

SUMMARY...LIGHT FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION TO MAINLY
SLEET ALONG A CORRIDOR FROM SOUTHEAST TX INTO CENTRAL LA BY 12Z WITH
SLEET PERSISTING THROUGH THE MORNING. A SIMILAR TRANSITION IS
EXPECTED TO OCCUR EWD OVER MUCH OF SRN MS AND EVENTUALLY INTO SRN AL
BY 18Z AS PRECIPITATION BEGINS IN THESE AREAS FROM W-E.

MEANWHILE...FREEZING RAIN WITH RATES OF 0.05-0.1 INCH PER 3 HOURS IS
EXPECTED TO BECOME THE PRIMARY PRECIP-TYPE AFTER 15Z OVER SOUTH
CENTRAL TO SERN LA...EXCLUDING AREAS CLOSER TO THE COAST IN SERN
LA...WITH FREEZING RAIN ALSO THE PRIMARY THREAT OVER FAR SERN
MS...FAR SWRN-SRN AL AND ADJACENT WRN FL PANHANDLE. FAR SERN
LA...CLOSER TO THE COAST...SHOULD BE REMAIN RAIN THROUGH 18Z AS
SURFACE TEMPERATURES PERSIST ABOVE 32 F.

DISCUSSION...SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWED A MIDLEVEL IMPULSE LOCATED
OVER E TX/NRN LA EARLY THIS MORNING WITH THIS FEATURE EXPECTED TO
SHIFT EWD THROUGH 18Z ACROSS THE LOWER MS VALLEY. A 06Z RESEARCH
SOUNDING AT TEXAS A&M /COLLEGE STATION TX/ INDICATED A WARM LAYER
BETWEEN APPROXIMATELY 750-850 MB WITH THE 800 MB TEMPERATURE AT +6-7
C. UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION ATTENDANT TO THE MIDLEVEL IMPULSE AND
LOWER LEVEL ISENTROPIC UPGLIDE HAVE RESULTED IN A SATURATION PROCESS
BELOW 850 MB. EVAPORATIVE COOLING WITHIN AN INITIALLY DRIER...COLD
AIR MASS HAS RESULTED IN LIGHT FREEZING RAIN AT THE PRESENT TIME
OVER PARTS OF SOUTHEAST TX INTO CENTRAL LA. AS THE MIDLEVEL IMPULSE
SHIFTS EWD THIS MORNING...LOW LEVEL COLD ADVECTION SHOULD RESULT IN
A VERTICAL THERMODYNAMIC PROFILE MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEET THAN
FREEZING RAIN FROM SOUTHEAST TX THROUGH SWRN-CENTRAL LA. A SIMILAR
TRANSITION FROM FREEZING RAIN TO SLEET IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR FARTHER
EWD OVER SRN MS TO SWRN AL BETWEEN 15-18Z.

MEANWHILE...THE PRIMARY PRECIP-TYPE WITHIN A NARROW CORRIDOR FROM
SOUTH CENTRAL TO SERN LA THROUGH FAR SERN MS...AND FAR SWRN-SRN AL
AND ADJACENT WRN FL PANHANDLE IS EXPECTED TO BE FREEZING RAIN. LOW
LEVEL WAA SHOULD BE PROLONGED THROUGH THE MORNING ACROSS THESE
AREAS...WITH EVAPORATIVE COOLING RESULTING IN FREEZING RAIN AS
SURFACE TEMPERATURES COOL TO SUB-FREEZING WET BULB TEMPERATURES
ALREADY PRESENT.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...CORRECTED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAKE CHARLES LA
352 AM CST TUE JAN 28 2014

Quote:.DISCUSSION...RADAR/SURFACE OBS DEPICTING A WINTRY MIX OF LIGHT
PRECIP OVER CENTRAL LOUISIANA INTO INTERIOR SOUTHEAST TEXAS.
TEMPERATURES HAVE ALREADY PLUMMETED DOWN INTO THE UPPER 20S ACROSS
THIS AREA...SO HAD WHICH HAD BEEN FALLING AS LIGHT RAIN IS NOW
FREEZING RAIN. PRECIPITATION HAS INITIATED AND IS ALIGNED WITH THE
850 MB TROF/COLD FRONT. TEMPERATURES FURTHER SOUTH ARE GENERALLY
IN THE LOW TO MID 30S...AND WITH CONTINUED COLD AIR ADVECTION WILL
PROBABLY BE AT OF BELOW FREEZING COME SUNRISE. WOULD NOT BE
SURPRISED TO SEE SOME FURTHER LOWERING OF TEMPS THROUGH THE DAY AS
CAA CONTINUES...ENHANCED BY EVAPORATIONAL COOLING AS PRECIP
OVERSPREADS THE AREA.

LITTLE CHANGES TO THE PREVIOUS FORECAST. A VERY MISERABLE DAY
AHEAD AND OUR WINTER WEATHER WARNING CONTINUES. THE CURRENT
WINTRY MIX TO THE NORTH IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE OVER INTO LIGHT
SNOW. FURTHER SOUTH FORECAST SOUNDINGS ARE STILL PINGING ON SLEET
AND FREEZING RAIN AND LESS TOWARDS SNOW. FREEZING RAIN
ACCUMULATION COULD BE SIGNIFICANT...BUT CERTAINLY HOPE THIS IS NOT
THE CASE. DID ADD ONE ADDITIONAL HAZARD...A HARD FREEZE WARNING
FOR THE FORECAST AREA TONIGHT. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ALEXANDRIA...
RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES APPEAR TO BE LIKELY. THE CURRENT RECORDS
MAY BE SEEN BELOW.

TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN UNSEASONABLY COLD FOR WEDNESDAY AND
WEDNESDAY NIGHT. SOUTHERLIES RETURN THURSDAY WITH THE EASTWARD
ADVANCEMENT OF ARCTIC DOME. A VERY NICE AND MUCH APPRECIATED
WARMUP THEN BEGINS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK.

RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES FOR 1/29...WEDNESDAY MORNING

LCH...25 SET IN 1961
BPT...25 SET IN 1961
LFT...24 LAST SET IN 1961
ARA...24 LAST SET IN 1961
AEX...12 SET IN 1905

&&

.MARINE...STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE COASTAL
WATERS INTO WEDNESDAY. IN ADDITION POLAR AIR ACCOMPANYING THESE
NORTHERLY WINDS WILL FILTER ACROSS THE AREA...AND GULF AIR
OVERRIDING THIS COLD AIR WILL RESULT IN THE LIKELIHOOD OF A WINTRY
MIX OF PRECIPITATION ON TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT...MAINLY FOR THE
NEAR SHORE WATERS. WINDS WILL RELAX ON WEDNESDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE
BUILDS OVER THE REGION...THEN BECOME SOUTHERLY BY THURSDAY AS THE
HIGH PUSHES EAST OF THE WATERS. A MODERATE ONSHORE FLOW IS
EXPECTED BY LATE IN THE WEEK AS LOW PRESSURE DEEPENS OVER THE
PLAINS STATES.

That will be a major problem with trees and power lines snapping. So I hope everyone in the danger zone has made preparations to be stuck for a couple days with out electricity and blocked roads (kind of like we do for a Cane).

NBC/TWC was hyping this as the worst in a century - I thought I remembered some Gulf Snow Storms alot worse in 2009, so I thought I'd take a look.

So how bad is it compared to last 5 years?
