GOM OIL Spill headed for the Coast ?
warwoman Wrote:Maybe you "oilfield trash" folks can explain something to me. All we've heard in the recent past is how drilling has gotten so much safer, with new technology supposed to prevent something like this from happening. You know, from new procedures to improved equipment such as state of the art BOP's and such. Can anybody hazard a guess as to what happened? I know there was talk about a mishap while cementing the well, but does anybody here have a good guess?

another question that is nagging at me,is why are "SWAT" teams being brought into play on rigs? where are they from? Are they the "SWAT" teams you see on any local police force,or are they from another agency? What other use could they have other than to protect rigs....from what??
What the hell is going on???? Anybody have a guess?

I don't know how much it's changed from my days in the oil patch back in the mid '70's, but back then, it was not uncommon for some oil reserves to be left alone due to the lack of technology to handle the tremendous pressures. There just wasn't anything that could handle the pressure when the reserve was tapped.

From the reports I've read and witness statements, the well blew out when they were cementing the casings. If it was like when we had a blowout where I worked, the gas rose through the uncured cement and blew out between the casings. This is an uncontrolled situation and the only cure is a relief well and the hope the well doesn't catch fire.

They just shut down commercial and recreational fishing from the Ms/La border to the mouth of the river. I'm pissed!
