AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service, Tampa Bay Ruskin, Florida 8:24 a.m. EST

Saturday, January 9, 2010...Updated to account for continued wintry precip...Update...Light Rain showers mixed with pockets of sleet continue over parts of West Central Florida. Temps this mornings have not risen as originally anticipated (and have in fact fallen with several spots) which in turns is helping to maintain sleet in a few locations. Have adjusted grids...yet again...to put light Sleet across the area from southern Citrus to Polk Counties.

Overall Forecast looks to be on track but most likely to adjust high this morning as temps will struggle to reach 40. Previous...Overall..this was by far a cold rain event but we did receive reports of sleets and even a snowflake or two north of Pasco. 12z sounding really says it all this morning...a deep warm layer from 750-SFC maintained widespread light rainshowers. As evidence from the 12z sounding...areas south of Hernando County where heavier showers fell enhanced evaporative cooling which produced pockets of rain mixed with sleet. Looking at soundings from JAX and TLH...much cooler low level temps further north would support the cause for brief very light wet snow for Hernando...Citrus and Sumter County (Precip was far enough south not to affect Levy). This was actually the case at X40 (Inverness) where a brief period of light snow was reported. But overall the dominate precip was rain mixed with areas of sleet. From pictures we have received from local media outlets...Areas north of Pasco definitely received more sleet compared to Hillsborough/Polk. This matches up pretty well from 12z sounding interpolations across those areas.
