Could the insurance companies be the main problem?
If a hospital charges $25 for an aspirin, and the insurance company pays it, then why not charge it?
Should the government step in and put "maximum allowable by law" caps on procedures and medical supplies & pharmaceuticals? This discourages free enterprise, but could it protect the public?
Healthcare costs are out of control--no doubt about it--and government intervention in the healthcare industry is a horrible option. There should be a viable way for the industry to regulate itself. But I'm not smart enough to figure that out.
All I know is what I DON'T want: Government run healthcare.
Calling Dr Proger: Where are you and what are your thoughts??

My husband is 52 years old and a dialysis patient. Dialysis is what keeps him alive, his diagnosis of end stage renal disease is a terminal disease. Without dialysis he would die in a matter of weeks. With the selective process of who is statistically a qualifying social asset, my hubby's dialysis would be stopped because of the cost to keep him alive being until transplant, if he gets a transplant then there is the very expensive anti rejection drugs he will have to take afterwards for life. Transplant isn't a cure, it's another form of treatment. The government appointed oversight committee that decides who gets life saving measures would most likely turn him down because it would be much more cost effective for them to pay for his death rather than keep paying for him to live. Almost all dialysis patients would be in danger of not getting the treatment to save their lives and almost all kidney, liver and heart transplants would cease, more cost effective to keep them comfortable until they die. I think this is a mess that will never go away because of the outragous cost of meds, proceedures, malpractice lawsuits, and dr office visits. It's just going to get worse.

I actually work at a VA, maybe they are different in different places but the vets at our institution get excellent and efficient care. This is not an endorsement for nationalized care, I'm just putting my 2 cents in for the VA.

I am glad to hear that where you are working is providing good service to our Vets. Lord knows they deserve it.
What do your collegues think of the Obamacare being proposed? What do you think of it? Has anyone you know actually worked under a government-run healthcare program in another country?
(By the way--come aound more often. We miss you!/loved)

I forgot to mention: Since you are in Houston, Texas, I am not surprised the hospital is good. They are known for great medical facilities.

Not many people are for it, I have run into several physicians from Europe and one of the main reasons they came here was to get away from government run care. Everyone agrees something needs to be done but this isn't the answer. People don't realize EVERYONE has access to care in the US. Even the homeless. Just walk into any county hospital (in LA Univeristy hosp, Chabert hosp, EKL...in Houston Ben Taub, LBJ) and they are full of patients who will never ever be able to pay for their care, and guess what? They get their cancer diagnosed and treated, they get bypass surgery if they need it, they get their gallbladder removed if needed...And it may not happen overnight like at a private hospital (unless truly an emergency) but it does happen pretty quickly. And those doctor's work their because they care about those types of patients. They don't make nearly as much as private hospital docs but they love to work there. So this is a gigantic myth that people without insurance do not have access to healthcare. Their care in most instances is cheaper than if you have insurance! Heck even the illegals fill our rooms!

Makes you wonder if it was the insurance companies that were doing all the complaining about so many uninsured, thinking that g'ment run healthcare would never be allowed, so they would profit by companies getting incentives to insure all their employees therefor giving the insurance companies more money through more premiums. I guess this g'ment healthcare should be the last thing they want.

The insurance companies are the real problem to begin with. I think if the government really wanted to help, it would force the insurance companies to do what they are paid to do.
