SNOWFALL WILL DEVELOP THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AS A 140+ KT JET STREAK
EMERGES FROM THE BASE OF THE APPROACHING TROUGH OVER SRN NEW
ENGLAND...WHILE THE ENTRANCE REGION OF A 160+ KT JET LIFTS NORTH
TOWARD THE GULF OF SAINT LAWRENCE. THIS WILL YIELD VERY STRONG UPR

This is what is posted on the Mount Washington Observatory this morning:

"Due to the heavy snowfall, the microwave link between the summit and our facility in North Conway is temporarily down. We're working to remedy the problem and we hope that weather information, forecasts, webcams and observer comments here on the website will resume normal operations shortly."


You know that this was one hell of a storm that the Norhteast had last night. It looks like they might get it again Tuesday of next week.

My family in NW Arkansas is without power and will probably not have it back for a few days..... I hope to God they all go to one house with a generator. (Since I have 14+ cousins in the same area!... I think there are 14, maybe more... oh wait.. 15, I forgot to count my uncle). They're all ok for now, but many of them are staying with each other or in hotels... I haven't heard from any of my family in NE Arkansas (only four up there), but two of them are elderly and one is in very poor health. I hope to speak with my cousins tonight.

Does anyone have information on how Russelville, AR did? Was there ice or rain? My other cousins live there (yeah, I have a huge a$$ family) and I still haven't heard back from them...

Entergy Texas has sent 243 utility workers to Arkansas to speed its recovery from an ice storm that downed power lines serving millions of people from North Texas to the Northeast.

Entergy Texas sent 216 workers on Tuesday and 27 more on Wednesday to Arkansas, said utility spokeswoman Debi Derrick.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — More than a million homes and businesses left in the cold without power today in the wake of an icy winter storm could face a lengthy wait for electricity to come back, even as federal help was promised to two states hit hardest by the blast.

Late Wednesday, President Barack Obama signed requests from Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe for federal emergency declarations. Crews — even the National Guard in Kentucky — worked around the clock to resurrect power lines downed by thick ice in both states. Officials in states from Oklahoma to West Virginia fought to do the same.

Utility officials estimated more than 1.3 million homes and businesses across a wide swath of states were powerless early today, and warned it could be mid-February before some customers had power.

MURRAY, Ky. — Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has called up all of his Army National Guard troop and some Air National Guard units to get the state back on its feet following a crippling ice storm.

The addition of 3,000 soldiers and airmen makes 4,600 Guardsmen pressed into service. It’s the largest call-up in state history.

More than 400,000 people remain without power in Kentucky five days after the storm hit. Many others still lack electricity in other states from the Midwest into Appalachia.

The storm is suspected in at least 42 deaths across several states. Authorities say it could be weeks before some areas get power back.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CNN) -- National Guard troops were going door to door Sunday in Kentucky, checking on families in the worst-hit areas of what Gov. Steve Beshear called "the biggest natural disaster that this state has ever experienced in modern history."

The devastating ice storm has been blamed for at least seven deaths in Kentucky, Beshear said. In total, 21 deaths have been reported in the state since the storm hit on Tuesday, but authorities could not immediately confirm whether all were directly storm-related.
