AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAMPA BAY RUSKIN FL
210 AM EST SAT JAN 10 2009

Forecast Discussion for January 10-16, 2009

SHORT TERM (TODAY-MONDAY)...A COMPLICATED SHORT-TERM SCENARIO CONTINUES TO UNFOLD THIS MORNING. SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES THE TROUGH OVER THE WESTERN STATES IS CONTINUING ITS SPLIT WITH ONE PORTION OF ENERGY MOVING SOUTHWARD TOWARD WESTERN TEXAS...AND ANOTHER MOVING EASTWARD OVER THE UPPER MID-WEST. AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IS DEEPENING AT THE SURFACE AHEAD OF THE NORTHERN WAVE...WITH A COLD FRONT DRAPED FROM WESTERN TEXAS TO EASTERN MISSOURI. THE FORECAST MODELS HAVE BEEN HAVING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME REMAINING CONSISTENT ON HOW THEY HANDLE THE MOVEMENT AND TIMING OF THIS FRONT. CURRENT PROJECTIONS HAVE SLOWED THE FRONT NEARLY 12 HOURS SLOWER THAN MODEL RUNS FROM YESTERDAY. THIS TREND IS SUPPORTED BY A LACK OF A STRONG SYSTEM UPSTREAM THAT WOULD ACT TO PUSH THE FRONT MORE QUICKLY. HAVE TRENDED FORECAST TOWARD THE CURRENT SOLUTIONS WITH THE BEST CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION OCCURRING SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY. CURRENT THINKING IS THAT PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS WILL BE ON THE LIGHT SIDE...HOWEVER THERE ARE HINTS IN THE ECMWF SOLUTION THAT THE FRONT WILL STALL AND PRODUCE HEAVIER AMOUNTS OF PRECIPITATION OVER NORTHERN LOCATIONS. QUIET WEATHER WILL BE IN PLACE UNTIL THE FRONT FINALLY APPROACHES...WITH TEMPERATURES ABOVE NORMAL.

LONG TERM MON NIGHT-FRIDAY)...A WEAK FRONT WILL CLEAR THE AREA MONDAY NIGHT WITH COOLER AND DRIER HIGH PRESSURE BUILDING ACROSS THE STATE. HIGH PRESSURE WILL THEN CONTINUE ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH THURSDAY KEEPING CONDITIONS COOL AND DRY. A DRY WEAK FRONT WILL THEN MOVE THROUGH THE AREA THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY. TEMPS WILL REMAIN BELOW NORMAL THROUGH THE PERIOD.
