Special weather statement
national weather service tampa bay ruskin fl
204 pm edt mon oct 27 2008

...Coldest air of the season on the way...

a strong cold front now over north florida early this afternoon will sweep southeast through west central and southwest florida later this afternoon and tonight. In the wake of the front a blustery northwest to northerly wind flow will usher in some of the coldest air of the season for later tonight through wednesday. Northwest to north winds will begin to increase into the 10 to 20 mph range with a few higher gusts overnight with temperatures falling to around 40 over the nature coast...lower to mid 40s central interior sections except upper 40s to around 50 tampa and along the coast...and upper 40s to lower 50s over southwest florida. During the day on tuesday ample sunshine is expected...however strong cold air advection will keep temperatures from rising much with highs only climbing into the lower to mid 60s from the bay area north and mid to upper 60s over the south...with brisk northerly winds making it feel even cooler.

During tuesday night winds will begin to diminish as strong surface high pressure builds in from the north. The lighter winds combined with clear skies and a very dry air mass will support good radiational cooling which will support some of the coldest temperatures of the season by early wednesday morning. Current guidance suggests that temperatures will fall into the lower and middle 30s over the nature coast with pockets of near freezing temperatures possible in the normally colder inland sheltered locations...to the upper 30s to around 40 central interior...except upper 40s to around 50 along the coast and lower to mid 40s across southwest florida.

Residents planning to be out this evening and again tuesday night should prepare accordingly. Bring several layers of clothing...as they will insulate you better than a single coat or jacket.

Residents should cover or move indoors any cold sensitive plants later today. Also...bring pets indoors this evening.
