Despite the red flag warnings up here, controlled burning was underway over the weekend at Eglin and other points north. We've had some rain, including a decent thunderstorm mid-week last week, but overall everything is also brown and dry looking. La Nina has done a number on the overall rainfall this winter, and the temps have flip flopped so often, that plants don't know what to do. It was in the upper 20s on Sunday night for instance and tomorrow will be 71.

Yikes! We are solidly in the pink in southern Marion county.

Seems like everyday now on the news we hear about a brush fire starting up somewhere and threatening homes, travel and land.

We'll end February here with just .70" of rain and .60" of that fell on one day around February 2nd before the cold blast that settled in.

By my calculations since the end of August here at Spring Hill we are 16.00" below normal on rainfall. We've had only 5.34" of rain since August 26, 2008 here. And we are getting into March and April which tend to be very dry anyway before we head into the rainy season.

I'm about 3 inches up on you for that time period.
Hopefully we can bump up February's numbers Saturday night. Although from what I'm reading it looks like that line won't be bad at all. Probably more of what we're used to.

28.5 last night. The cold season just doesn't want to end.
I keep records back to 03. Starting with the Winter of 03-04 to 07-08 we had a total of 23 days below 32. This Winter alone we have 20 days below 32.
Being that we are into March I doubt we'll get anymore but with the way this Winter has gone who knows.
Supposedly the La Nina we are in has something to do with this. It started in earnest in December but December wasn't that cool. In fact we had only 2 days below freezing.
Unfortunately the La Nina is expected to last until June which means lower then normal rain. I can't imagine what conditions will be like in May as dry as they are now.

The past couple of below 32 days we've had, I've foolishly said it won't happen again. Not going to make that mistake again this time. The low here early this morning was 31.

Make that 21 days this winter below freezing. NWS forecasted mid 30's last night but it bottomed out at 29 degrees.

Yes, we know what you mean here as well. We did have a teaser last night when the sea-breeze moved in and collided with the east coast breeze and it got dark and we had a light shower, but nothing like we need.

I just hope this is a tickler for what the summer will bring, but that is at least 2 months away. We don't need the whole state in smoke before then.
