...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON CST TODAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SLIDELL HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON CST TODAY.

A COLD AND POTENT STORM SYSTEM WILL CAUSE A COLD RAIN TO MIX WITH
SLEET THIS MORNING...THEN MIX WITH AND CHANGEOVER TO SNOW DURING
THIS MORNING RUSH HOUR...GENERALLY BETWEEN 6 AND 10 AM.
TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN JUST ABOVE FREEZING WITH THE
GROUND REMAINING RELATIVELY WARM...HOWEVER OCCASIONAL HEAVY BURSTS
OF SNOW MAY CAUSE ONE TO TWO INCHES OF ACCUMULATION IN GRASSY
AREAS WITH SOME ICING AND SLUSHY CONDITIONS POSSIBLE ON ELEVATED
BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE BACK TO A
MIX OF LIGHT RAIN AND LIGHT SLEET BY NONE...THEN END AS ALL LIGHT
RAIN DURING THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS AS TEMPERATURES WARM BACK
TO THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 40S.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW AND SLEET
WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS
AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING...
PARTICULARLY ON ELEVATED BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES.

New Orleans Local Weather thread - dkmac - 12-11-2008 06:38 AM

Definitely cold enough to snow here - 33°F temp and 33°F dewpoint. We've gotten just over an inch of rain since yesterday. Looking at NWS Slidell radar, you can see what looks like circulation in the rain patterns.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW ORLEANS LA
405 AM CST SAT DEC 13 2008

.DISCUSSION...
LATEST UPPER AIR ANALYSIS SHOWED A WESTERLY FLOW OVER THE MISSISSIPPI
VALLEY AND PLAINS. A VIGOROUS CYCLONIC CIRCULATION WAS LOCATED
OVER WASHINGTON. LATEST SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED A 1027MB HIGH
MAINLY OVER THE SOUTHEAST CONUS AND A TROUGH OVER THE NORTHERN AND
CENTRAL PLAINS. IN ADDITION...SOUTHERLY FLOW WAS NOTED NEBRASKA TO
TEXAS AND A SLIGHT SOUTHEAST FLOW WAS NOTED OVER SOUTHEAST
LOUISIANA AND SOUTH MISSISSIPPI. SURFACE HIGH IS EXPECTED TO SLIDE
EAST ALONG THE EASTERN SEABOARD BY TONIGHT. AS A RESULT...SOUTHEAST
FLOW WILL BECOME MORE ESTABLISHED GOING INTO SUNDAY. THE SYSTEM
OVER WASHINGTON WILL DROP SOUTHEAST OVER THE GREAT BASIN AND AS
THE ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW MOVES OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS EARLY
SUNDAY. THUS...CREATING A TIGHT PRESSURE FROM THE GREAT LAKES
REGION TO SOUTHERN PLAINS. THE STRONGEST FLOW MAY EXIST NORTH AND
MODERATE FLOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SOUTH TO GULF SUNDAY. WITH
TROUGH OVER THE ROCKIES AND SOUTHWEST FLOW OVER THE
REGION...THICKNESS WILL INCREASE ALONG WITH TEMPS FOR NEXT WEEK. IN
ADDITION...LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WILL INCREASE ON THE SOUTH WINDS
SUNDAY INTO NEXT WEEK. DO EXPECT BOUNDARY WINDS TO DECOUPLE
SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY NIGHT FOR INTERIOR SECTIONS OF THE
FORECAST AREA...THEREFORE FOG FORMATION IS POSSIBLE ACROSS
INTERIOR ZONES MONDAY MORNING. ALTHOUGH...WE ARE NOT EXPECTING ANY
FRONTAL PASSAGES NEXT WEEK...A FRONTAL BOUNDARY IS EXPECTED JUST
NORTHWEST OF THE FORECAST AREA LATE SUNDAY INTO MONDAY. MID LAYER
MOISTURE ADVECTED IN FROM THE SOUTH...WILL LIKELY PROVIDE MID
LAYER INSTABILITY JUST NORTHWEST OF THE AREA. THE CLOSE PROXIMITY
WILL YIELD A CHANCE OF CONVECTION FOR NORTHWEST ZONES MONDAY INTO
TUESDAY. THEREAFTER...MOISTURE REMAINS IN PLACE WITH NO REAL
TRIGGER OVER THE AREA THROUGH THURSDAY. ECMWF SLOWLY DRIVE A FRONT
THROUGH THE AREA NEXT WEEKEND WHILE GFS KEEPS THIS BOUNDARY NORTH
THE AREA. WILL MAINTAIN ABOVE NORM TEMPS AND TOKEN SLIGHT CHANCES
FOR NEXT WEEKEND.

&&

.AVIATION...
VISIBLE SATELLITE SHOWS AN AREA OF HIGH CLOUDS MOVING TOWARDS THIS
REGION AND HAVE ADDED A SCT AND THEN BKN250 DECK FOR TODAY. MID TO
LOW CLOUDS SHOULD START MOVING INTO THE REGION BY LATE AFTERNOON AND
CONTINUE INCREASING THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENING AND
THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT. EXPECT LIGHT MORNING WINDS TO BECOME SOUTHEAST
AT AROUND 10 TO 15 KTS. VFR CONDITIONS WILL DOMINATE THE MAJORITY OF
THE PERIOD AND POSSIBLY DROP TO MVFR DEPENDING ON HOW LOW THE DECK
IS LATE IN THE PERIOD.
